Lake Russell or officially Richard B. Russell Lake, named after US Senator Richard Brevard Russell Jr., is a reservoir built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the late 1970s and early 80s. The lake is fed by the Savannah River, Beaverdam Creek on the Georgia side and Rocky River on the South Carolina side.
From a real estate point of view, the lake is very much different from Lake Hartwell in the north and Lake Thurmond in the south since government regulations prohibit private use of the public lands surrounding Lake Russell. So no lakefront homes and lots are being sold around Lake Russell.
